After several lay days at Tavarua, the much anticipated super-swell aimed at Fiji brought a herd of sideshore whitecaps to Cloudbreak and Restaurants. As the swell continued building, the call was made to run the last 2 heats of Round 2 in giant lumpy lefts before the event was called off for the day.
Yet as if on cue, the wind clocked back offshore and the swell pulsed with sets rivaling last summer’s monster session. Luckily, Volcom kept the live coverage running for 2 hours, despite the event status. What followed will be thoroughly documented in the coming days, and there is likely more on the way.
Here are two screengrabs of Reef Mcintosh, who along with Chilean Ramon Navarro and John John Florence, can claim wave of the day honors. Several other CT surfers were out among the hellmen as well, including Pat Gudauskas who landed what Kelly Slater called the sickest air-drop he’s ever seen, just before getting throttled by about 5 stories of Fijian lip.
Winds permitting, look for the event to be back on tomorrow, first call at 7:30 am local time.
