Volcom Stone’s Totally Crustaceous VQS Surf Series 2007/08 will reach its mind-blowing climax on April 4th and 5th when surfers from all over Australia descend on Manly Beach to compete in the VQS Grand Championships for a chance to win two fully paid airfares to Newport Beach, California and a shot at $100,000 in prize money.
“That’s the same sort of money up for grabs at a World Tour Event so the stakes are high,” says Volcom Events Co-ordinator Robbie Warden before adding the VQS could not be more removed from your standard surfing competition.
“Surfing these days is a giant corporate industry and the pressure to get results is huge, not just on competitors but on their families as well,” explains Warden. “Volcom created the VQS series to put the fun back into competition. Free events are held right around the country over the course of the year and people of any age and ability can come down and experience what it’s like to surf a heat in a friendly grassroots environment.”
It’s a formula that has taken off with this year’s VQS series attracting record numbers of entrants. Says Warden: “The great thing is that even if you don’t surf there’s so much going on down at the beach you can’t help but have a great day. We have prizes, activities and entertainment. It’s a real festival atmosphere.”
After a great year of fun and mayhem 112 qualifiers from five states will line up at Manly to compete in four divisions including 14-under, 15-17s, Pro Am Opens and Open Girls. The winners of the Junior and Pro Am divisions will be flown courtesy of Volcom to Newport Beach California to represent Australia at the US$100,000 VQS World Titles.
Following on in the tradition of previous VQS Grand Championships, the event will be based on a “Mad Scientist” theme which Warden believes will transform the beach into an unlikely atomic laboratory.
“Last year we had a hippy theme and before that a medieval Knights and wenches feel. This year we’re gonna have labrats going berserk and it should be an unmissable spectacle,” says Warden.
Other highlights throughout the day will include Volcom Pro Team expression sessions and signings, a twilight aerial spectacular, live scientific experiments by genuine nutty professors as well as a host of other activities and entertainment.
