Hurley US Open Of Surfing WPS All Star Event

Ten of the world's best surfers—selected by the public—are guaranteed to compete.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – IMG and World Professional Surfers (WPS) are debuting an exciting new concept at the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing, July 18 to 26 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Dubbed the World Professional Surfers (WPS) All-Star Event, fans will decide 10 of the world's best surfers including World Champions Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, C.J. Hobgood and Andy Irons plus six other surfers, all of whom will compete in the six-star World Qualifying Series (WQS) competition.

The concept is simple.  WPS, an organization that works on behalf of the Association of Surfing Professionals touring athletes, helped hatch an event that is the sport's equivalent to the Home Run Derby or the Slam Dunk Contest.  The fan's top 10 surfers attend the Hurley U.S. Open, compete in the WQS event, receive recognition on stage and participate in a PWC-assisted expression session.

Voting is underway at  The ballot box closes on June 14 so surf fans must act quickly.

“The WPS All-Stars Expression Session is great for the sport of surfing,” said James Leitz, Vice President of IMG Actions Sports.  “Once again, the massive mainstream media, along with thousands of fans can see these surfing icons perform live in Huntington Beach.”

The Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing is the world's largest professional surfing competition, hosting 500 world-class athletes and drawing more than 400,000 spectators over nine days.  With a rich history dating back to 1959, the massive event boasts North America's only combined six-star WQS-rated men's and women's events.  Offering cash prizes totaling $210,000, the prestigious competition is critical to American surfers aspiring to reach the ASP's elite World Tours.  All of the action is accessible live on

World Professional Surfers (WPS) is owned by the World Tour Professional Surfers themselves. Formed in 2001 to promote, represent and safeguard Pro Surfers' interests both during and after their surfing careers.  It is the voice of the Athletes.  All 45 Athletes on the World Championship Tour are members of the WPS as well as a growing number of Surfers from the World Qualifying Series (WQS) – the feeder series for the Tour.  See more on our website:
