We caught up with Cleanline Surf Shop Owner Josh Gizdavich to hear the history behind the shop, best selling product categories and brands, and who and what has inspired him to continue pumping time and energy into the retail location for the past 34 years.

Approximately 3000 & 2000 

How long has Cleanline Surf been open?

Since 1980.

What was your experience before opening Cleanline Surf?

Line cook and full time surfer.

Why did you want to open a surf shop?

To support my habit.

Who are some of the typical customers of Cleanline Surf?

Addicts like me and local families.

What are the weather and surf conditions like in the Northwest?

Weather conditions can vary from sub-freezing with snow to sunburns in boardshorts.

What kind of surfer and customer do those conditions produce?

Surfers range from some of the most hardcore extremists to the average 'I wanna learn to surf' beginner. 

If your shop had a theme song, what would it be?

'The future's so bright I gotta wear shades.'

Where do you usually spend your lunch break?

I don't get a lunch break but if I did it would be at the beach.

Favorite locals best keep secrets? (surf spots and otherwise)

I never kiss and tell, that's why they stay secret spots.

Best moments that make you love your job?

The enthusiasm and stoke of the up and coming surf kids.

Too busy chasing my own dream to watch one.

Apparel, Rentals, Wetsuits.

What has been the single best-selling brand over the past six months?


Who are the top three reps that service your store and what makes them special?

Jim MacVicar/O'Neill, Aaron Smith/Patagonia, Jason Miller/Horizon. Real people who never push for sales and always do everything they can to help our success. They also answer our phone calls and emails swiftly so we feel well serviced.

What's your overall impression of the local market over the past six months?

Things are looking up.

What store (or multiple stores) are your closest competition?

Gorge Performance, Oregon Surf Shop.

What are your expectations for business over the next 6-12 months?

Fairly optimistic.

What are some things that brands are doing to work with your shop?

Consignments, buy backs and/or trade outs. 

Last time you caught a shoplifter?

About a year ago.

I'm very proud and stoked to have served the surf community for 34 years and I still love coming to work everyday!
