Gabriel Medina & John John Florence Face Off At Billabong Pro Tahiti

Billabong Pro Tahiti, WSL, World Surf League, John John Florence, Gabriel Medina, Teahupo'oMedina Advances After Epic Matchup Against Florence At Billabong Pro Tahiti

Gabriel Medina and John John Florence, two of the most popular surfers in the world faced off in an epic match up earlier this week at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. The matchup occurred much earlier than many fans hoped for due to the current World Surf League (WSL) rankings of the two surfers. Medina currently ranks 15th on the tour after a slow start to the competitive circuit this year and Florence is ranked 14th after missing the last two stops of the WSL Samsung Galaxy Champion Tour due to a high ankle sprain that occurred back in June.

The two had split previous head-to-head battles 2-2. An even matchup on paper, the battle in round 3 of the Billabong Pro Tahiti did not disappoint. Medina, the reigning WSL Champion and defending Billabong Pro Tahiti winner advanced after a back and forth battle. During the heat there were six scores of 9.0 or better. Kelly Slater even went as far as calling it the heat of the year. Spectators got everything they asked for… an epic battle for the ages between two of the most polarizing figures right now in surfing. Unfortunately the match up took place much earlier than many had hoped for. Rest assured, there are plenty of future opportunities for another match up between Florence and Medina. Maybe next time it will be in the semis or finals.
