This past weekend, Kelly Slater’s new brand Outerknown hosted an intimate beach-house gathering at famed architect Harry Gesner’s Sand Castle house right off Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Guests at the soiree included Cindy Crawford, Chris Hemsworth and the Red Hot Chili Pepper's Anthony Kiedis. Other mentions of A-list actors and actresses included Julia Roberts, Jason Statham, and Johnny Knoxville. Executives from Kering, Volcom’s parent company who is housing the new brand under its umbrella, were also on the scene, including Volcom Founder Richard “Wooly” Woolcott. The event was covered by the LA Times, amongst other publications, with its staff calling the new brand an “understated” luxury surf collection with production transparency and a focus on sustainability at the forefront of what they do.

Outerknown launched its first collection at retail in mid-July and has since released even more details behind its production and development process—a program that’s been 28 months in the making.  Outerknown is working with Italian based group Aquafil, which offers an incentive for fishermen to turn in and properly dispose of their worn nets, keeping them out of the sea. Using a regeneration process, the nets are broken down, combined with other types of pre- and post-consumer waste and transformed into ECONYL, an innovative new nylon yarn. Aquafil describes their process as regeneration as opposed to recycling because it’s a closed-loop system, there’s an infinite number of times the nylon can be broken down and re-born into new yarn without any loss of quality.
