Skullcandy Founder Rick Alden recently received Entrepreneur Magazine’s “Entrepreneur of 2009” award. According to the article announcing the honorees, the nominees were selected back in March, whittled down to 15 finalists and the winners were picked by a combination of judges and Entrepreneur magazine’s readers. Alden was featured on the cover of this month’s Entrepreneur magazine, which is on stands now, and says this about receiving the award:
"This is a huge honor for not only me, but the entire Skullcandy family and for the industry itself...I couldn't be more stoked to receive such recognition," said Rick Alden, CEO of Skullcandy. "It was cool to see that so many people cast their vote in our favor. I can't take credit without giving props to the whole Skullcandy squad - our success has definitely been a team effort."
In 2003, Alden launched Skullcandy to integrate audio and mobile technologies into skateboard, snowboard and lifestyle products. In just six short years, Skullcandy has grown to become the No.2-selling headphone company in the United States and has introduced a line of more than 100 SKU's of headphones, as well as many other audio products. Also critical to the brand's success is its collaborations with top artists and brands such as Snoop Dogg, Mix Master Mike, Def Jam Records, Giro Helmets, Smith Optics, Paul Frank, Von Zipper and Dragon Alliance.
Finalists for the second-annual Entrepreneur of 2009 contest were chosen based on how well they exemplified what entrepreneurship is all about today: answering a need, finding a solution, following a passion, taking calculated risks and above all- adapting to change, whether it’s economic or otherwise. After narrowing down the five finalists in March 2009, the contest opened up to the public for online voting through October 2009 to determine the winner.
