Sweetwater Three-peats | Oakley Surf Shop Challenge Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifier
The challenge continues for the title of the ‘most core’ surf shop in the U.S. The Oakley Surf Shop Challenge Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifiers went off yesterday, April 11, at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, NC.
This marks the second contest event on the eight-stop tour, which culminates in the Nationals event held in Southern California in the Fall of 2016. The premiere event, the Southwest Regional qualifiers in late March, crowned the Surf Ride Oceanside shop victors at Seaside Reef, Cardiff, CA.
Yesterday’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifiers initially faced unsure swell predictions, as the forecast showed 1-3 foot waves for Monday, and flat conditions on Tuesday. Luckily, the mid-Atlantic came through and served up waist high surf with some occasional chest high sets for the surf shops of the Atlantic to bring it.
The semi-final heat draw included ten surf shop teams competing, and five moving on to the finals. The mid-atlantic regionals showed a tightly contested final, but Sweetwater Surf Shop had just enough to defend their title and three-peat in their region. Surf City came in second, and Outer Banks Boarding Co in third.
Sweetwater Surf Shop, reigning regional champs, secured their spot to represent Mid-Atlantic surf shop talent at Nationals–so far up against Surf Ride Oceanside. The next OSSC event is set for this Thursday and Friday to determine the Northeast regional champs, depending on swell conditions. Check back at Transworld Biz for more updates.
