Under cloudy skies and windy conditions with gusts up to sixty miles an hour, the field of final competitors — 21 men and 10 women — tackled the steep 42 to 50 degree angle slope, Slots Rocks, on the Staircase Run in Mt. Crested Butte’s Extreme Limits. To score well, competitors had to negotiate challenging lines through extremely tight chutes loaded with trees, rocks and moguls requiring constant attention to the terrain ahead that demands top technical riding skills.
Defending champion, Clif Dimon, and local rider, Susan Mol took the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the big mountain extreme snowboarding competition here today during day four of the 8th Annual Magna Bloc U.S. Extreme Boarderfest presented by Subaru.
Dimon, 23, who started the final day in first place held on to his lead displaying exceptionally aggressive lines and consistent, strong riding throughout the competition. Second place Danny Hartigan rode strong and aggressively but not quite enough to bypass Dimon. Ox Maloley, 30, retired veteran rider now living in Grand Haven, MI, had the “run of the day” by far, putting it all together with a spectacular aggressive performance scoring three points higher than any other competitor.
Susan Mol held on to her lead from yesterday to defeat defending champion Rachael Baskefield. Mol had two spectacular runs featuring good technical lines and airs off several “pillowed” cliffs. Baskfield chose difficult runs and rode them smoothly but it was not enough to catch Mol’s lead from yesterday. Rounding out top honors for the women are Crested Butte rider Janae Deverall and Sarah Long from Jackson Hole with Kira Susnis coming from 11th place and ending up in 5th with a spectacular run that wowed the crowd and the judges.
The Jackson Hole Ski Club competitors swept the juniors division except for Amber Finley from Ft. Worth, TX, taking third place in the junior women’s category.
Scoring strong in all events and taking the overall first place Boarderfest titles were Teague Mullen of Schweitzer Mountain, ID and Stacy Kunkel of Breckenridge, CO both winning an additional $500 in cash and 7 night trips to any North American Club Med Village. Junior overall titles were Lynn Neil and Wade Dunstan, both from Jackson Hole, WY.
“We’ve seen some incredible riding here,” said Kurt Hoy, TransWorld special issues editor and this year’s espn2 television presenter for the event. “This event has big air, creative lines and speed – everything these top riders have ever done in their careers. The top riders are strong, technical and aggressive. And it doesn’t hurt to be a little flamboyant.”
“The Crested Butte athletes shine in this portion of the competition. This is their backyard and why they moved to Crested Butte – to ride the legendary terrain this mountain offers, which is one of a kind.”
Men and women have always taken home equal prize money in Crested Butte’s “extreme” events. Competitors are vying for a total cash and prize purse of $35,000 in this four-day event with first place extreme winners taking home $2500 each, trophies and killer prizes from our many awesome sponsors.
The awards banquet and party promises to be a blow out with Coolio at the helm to entertain the competitors, sponsors and event staff not only with some rap music from his new CD but with his own RAP CONTEST with plenty of great prizes. The elite group of Boarderfest judges, all former competitors and champions are hosting their own contest this evening and putting up their own prize money. All I know is T- shirts are involved! Thanks to all for another great event – see you next year.
