Huge Storm Allows Snowbird To Open Saturday

Snowbird, Utah – November 23, 2001–A gigantic winter storm has dumped more than 50 inches of snow at Utah’s Snowbird Ski Resort during the last 36 hours, allowing the resort to kick off it’s 30th anniversary season with exceptional conditions.

Snowbird will opened the Gadzoom, Wilbere and Chickadee chairlifts today. Tickets are $25. Two children 12 and under ski or ride the chairs free with each paying adult. The Tram is scheduled to open Sunday, Nov. 25 with weather and conditions permitting.

“Our Thanksgiving wish was granted in grand style with a dumping of great powder snow over the past day and a half,” said Snowbird’s President Bob Bonar. “This huge storm allows local and out-of-town skiers and boarders the opportunity to hit the slopes while enjoying their favorite past time activity this holiday weekend.”

This 50 inch accumulation gets Snowbird, one of North America’s top-10 ski resorts, according to SKIING Magazine, off to a strong start towards its annual average of 500 inches of snow. More snow is expected throughout the day and another large storm is on the horizon, according to the national weather service.

This year Snowbird built a second high-speed detachable quad lift in Mineral Basin, making the connection between Snowbird and legendary Alta possible for the first time. This also paved the way for a new Alta Snowbird “ONE TICKET” pass by transporting skiers to the sugarloaf saddle separating Alta’s Albion Basin and Snowbird’s Mineral Basin. Heralded as a “skiing connection” opening up 4700 skiable acres, the Alta Snowbird combination will also be served by additional public transportation between both base areas. Alta and Snowbird will continue separate ownership and operation, preserving the unique skiing experience and atmosphere each resort has to offer.

Located just 29 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport in the heart of the Wasatch Mountains, Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort is one of the most accessible all-season resorts in the world. Snowbird also offers a world class mountain spa and Gold Key award-winning conference and meeting facilities.
