Men’s 2011 Fall/Holiday Style Guide: Vans

Russ Pope, Vans Apparel Marketing Manager

What categories and styles did you see perform last season and how did you incorporate that retailer feedback into the collection?

Tops and outerwear including jackets and bottoms, denim and pants are growing for us. We’re continuing to develop those categories through updated fits and materials. The introduction of the V56 5-pocket pant bridging the skinny and slim fit is important across the bottoms category: a classic new style that bridges the gap between skinny and slim fit bottoms with a mid to low rise, easy through the seat and thigh and tapered leg with a 16 inch opening. Available in three different models and a range fabrications including denim, Bedford cord, heather twill and a heavy weight selvedge khaki.

Wovens is always an important category for Fall, what are some additions to last season’s flannels?

Traditional flannels still have legs, but we’ve added solid grindles, oxfords and microplaids.

What is the inspiration behind your jackets and some of the treatments and details that you put on them to make them unique?

Inspiration is found in military styling (Brigand jacket) as well as performance pieces such as our water-resistant Mountain Edition jacket.

What are some highlights for the Fall offerings?

Anthony Van Engelen Signature Styles: Vans and Anthony Van Engelen serve up another solid collection of casual core staples with his latest offering. Key styles include a blue grindle work wear inspired woven, the AV Atascadero, as well as the all new V56 AV Covina Selvedge pant which comes in a heavyweight khaki twill and features cool selvedge cuff detailing.  Also look for Anthony’s best-selling chino, the V56 Standard Covina, in four great shades for fall including charcoal heather twill.

Joel Tudor Signature Collection: Joel’s popular signature collection returns for Fall with a tight new assortment of casual surf pieces. Standout styles include the JT Brigg, a sharp corduroy long sleeve woven with contrasting cuff, as well as a new military inspired fleece piece, the JT Decontrol Button-Up Hoodie, which comes in both black and green.  Also look for the V66 Slim/Tudor, an up-date to Joel’s slim-fit corduroy pant, available in three utilitarian colors for fall. This season Vans tapped Joel’s line of unique, classic surfboards crafted under the Kookbox name, for a small capsule of apparel and surf footwear that includes a cool custom organic tee featuring Kookbox’s infamous skull graphic.
