Surf Industry Hacks Its Way Around Fullerton

To kick of the inaugural Surf Expo Back-To-School trade show at the Anaheim Convention Center, the Surf Expo crew hosted a golf tournament Sunday.

More than 30 retailers, manufacturers, and surf media — with miserable to club-pro-status golf games — showed up at the Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton, California to enjoy a casual round of golf and, in some cases, toss an associate out of the golf cart and send him home with a scraped back and a mild concussion. But that’s another story.

The format was best score (sort of like a scramble, but everyone played their own ball through each hole). Ron Jon’s Jon Sabo and Sun Diego’s Dave Nash handled the lightening-fast greens with ease, and were the stand-out retailers of the day. Counter Culture’s Chris Raya’s foursome navigated the hilly terrain and narrow fairways the best and grabbed team top honors with a group best of even par (70).

Special props go out to Surf Expo’s Dan Darby, who’s job for the day was to hunt down thirsty golfers and offer them a cold one from his never-ending supply of frosty suds. Also, congrats to TransWorld’s very own David Stoddard, who one the long-drive contest, and to Katherine Enriquez from Hobie for being closest to the pin.
