Team Breckenridge Wins UnVailed 2001

Vail, Colorado…March 24, 2001. On a perfect Colorado day, it was time to unwind, crank up the tunes, and celebrate spring break with UnVailed….The Ultimate Band & Board Event, presented by Ford Ranger.

Team Breckenridge finished on top with an impressive showing in the Superpipe and Big Air competition from Chad Otterstrom, Kyla Duffy, and Todd Richards. Breckenridge was in first place after the Superpipe heading onto the afternoon Big Air contest. Todd Richards wrapped up the Team victory, taking huge air on the Big Air jump, blowing away the competition with a score of 87 out of a possible 100 points on his first jump.

“I went with what I know how to do” said Richards, who stuck a pair of switch 900-degree spins in the big air to give Team Breckenridge a second straight title. Richards, Otterstrom and Duffy shared a prize of $10,000 and each rider takes home a Fender Guitar for the victory.

Team Whistler finished in second place with two solid big air jumps from Nic Drago. Drago was joined by David Carrier-Porcheron and Megan Pischke.

Local riders Kirk Short, Rachel Nelson and Chris Van Valy of Team Vail finished in third place.Teams of three riders representing 11 resorts from around the country came together to compete in the North American Snowboard Team Invitational. Teams consist of one woman and two men. Other resorts represented Saturday were Aspen, Raging Buffalo, IL, Eldora Moutain, Snow Summit, Copper Mountain, Buck Hill, MN , Winter Park and Beaver Creek. Unvailed 2001 was a Spring Break Party atmosphere with lots of sunshine, warm weather and live music. The competition was complimented by a large expo area at the base of Golden Peak with lots of food, drinks, and giveaway’s.

Drawing a huge crowd in the afternoon was the Rail Slide Exhibition. Paige Warner of Team Raging Buffalo won the Women’s Rail competition taking home $500, while Matt Peterson of Team Copper Mountain won the Men’s Rail winning $1000.

Jonny Moseley, Joe Pack and Evan Dybvig of the US Freestyle Team made a guest appearance with a Big Air Freestyle Exhibition sponsored by Sprint. An injured Moseley, commentated for his teammates as they caught huge air off the Golden Peak Big Air Jump.

Another aspect of the Unvailed weekend, considered the premier end of the season bash, Vail’s hottest nightclub 8150 was transformed into the UnVailed headquarters. UnVailed 2001 expanded the music this year focusing on alternative music all weekend long.

The action kicked off Thursday night at 10 pm with “Sucker”, a group sound that has evolved over the years into a tight, fiercely energetic mix of rap, rock, and reggae. The celebration continued Friday at 10 pm with well-known DJ Adam Beyer from Sweden. Headlining on Saturday, “Yo, Flaco!” was a big draw with a nine-piece band playing a blend of hip-hop, funk, and R&B.

The entire UnVailed spectacle will broadcast this April and May on a one-hour, nationally syndicated television special, produced by Eclipse Television & Sports Marketing, LLC of Vail.
