Westbeach Classic 2001 Cancelled

Vancouver, BC, — The Westbeach Classic 2001 has beencancelled. In a joint decision between Westbeach Sports and Westbeach retailit was determined that all resources originally intended for the WestbeachClassic 2001 would be allocated towards last weekend’s World SnowboardingChampionship, a Westbeach sponsored event. The Westbeach Classic 2001 wasset to occur May 18-20, 2001, on Whistler Mountain.

The World Snowboarding Championship was held from April 18 to 21,2001, wrapping up the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival. Over the fourdays of competition, a total of $260,000 USD in prize money was awarded toan elite field of athletes. The Worlds culminated on Saturday night (April21) with a big air competition and DJ show for a crowd of 15,000 at the baseof Whistler Mountain. Consensus among the riders was that this year’s WorldSnowboarding Championship was the best snowboarding contest ever.

In April 2000, the World Snowboarding Championship took the timeslotof the Westbeach Classic during the final weekend of the World Ski &Snowboard Festival. Over the past two years, the World SnowboardingChampionship has grown to epic proportions and is ranked among the bestsnowboarding competitions on the planet, taking away much of the statureonce held by the Westbeach Classic.

“For years, the Westbeach Classic was renowned among local riders asthe biggest spring snowboard contest at Whistler. Our attempt is to continuethat tradition but in a much bigger way with inviting the best riders in theworld to compete head to head over the four day period,” said Steve Dewar,President, Westbeach Sports. “We felt this opportunity for the Westbeachbrand was too good to pass up and decided to allocate and focus all of ourefforts and resources on that event. How many other brands in snowboardingtoday can say they have this kind of an opportunity! We would like to thankthe industry for its support of the Westbeach Classic over the years andhope that the World Snowboarding Championship continues on the strong springtradition that the Classic has carried for so many years.”

The Masters Group, event managers of the World SnowboardingChampionship, World Cup Snowboarding and the SnowJam (DV8) tour were set toorganize the Westbeach Classic 2001. “Our team was excited to run theWestbeach Classic 2001, but we understand the benefit of focusing allresources towards the Worlds,” says Mark Taylor, event manager, “after theamazing success of the 2001 Worlds, we want to continue our efforts withSims, Westbeach and Whistler/Blackcomb to take the World SnowboardingChampionship to new heights in 2002.”
