The Mavericks Invitational big-wave surf contest began Friday morning at 8 a.m. as a large north swell filled in at the notorious offshore break near Half Moon Bay in Central California.

Competitors from around the world arrived to greet the swell and participate in a marathon contest at one of the most dangerous surf spots on the planet.

An eerie fog and tossing seas greeted the surfers in the first 45-minute heat, but conditions began to clean up and the waves were getting bigger as the second heat got underway. Wave faces were measuring to about 40 feet.

The swell began to peak in California after slamming Hawaii on Wednesday and Thursday.

Peter Mel, 44, of nearby Santa Cruz is the defending Mavericks champion.

The finals, which will be televised live by Universal Sports, will be held at about 11:30 a.m. Viewers can watch the entire contest above.
