Lion’s treatment of baby antelope almost brings tourist to tears; video

Graeme Mitchley called Kruger National Park "the best place on Earth" because "you never know what lies in wait around the following bend."

Certainly Mitchley and his wife, frequent visitors to the world-famous park in South Africa, weren't expecting what happened in front of them as they waited near a watering hole for lions and other wildlife to show up.

They were shocked when they saw a lion carrying a baby antelope as if were its own cub. Mitchley shared the amazing video with Kruger Sightings, which entitled it "When the lion lies down with the lamb."

"Out of nowhere a lion came walking out of the dry bush with something in its mouth," Mitchley told Kruger Sightings. "At first, it looked like a lioness carrying her cub. However, at second glance, it turned out to be a young male carrying a newborn antelope."

Mitchley said the adrenaline was flowing as the scene unfolded in front of them, and at one point Mitchley said in the video, "I just wish he'd put it out of its misery."

"My wife was almost in tears, and given a chance she would have rescued the poor thing," he told Kruger Sightings.

"I think this was pure opportunism on the part of the lion as he must have stumbled upon the newborn whilst walking through the bush. I am not sure what happened to its mom, but she may have been grazing and wandered a bit too far off from her youngster."

They eventually lost sight of the lion and baby antelope, but they could hear the antelope bleating, which was heartbreaking.

They never learned what happened to the baby antelope but one could guess.

When a similar event occurred five years ago in Uganda, Craig Packer of the Lion Research Center at the University of Minnesota told Live Science that "the 'lamb' always gets eaten. It's quite common for cats to play with their prey and they can look very gentle doing it. But it always ends in tears."
